BLACK HUMOR
A. Schnittke
Polyphonic Tango
M. Weinberg
Cello Concerto
D. Shostakovich
Symphony No. 9
Brace yourself for a completely postmodern evening. The eclectic music miniatures program under the baton of Daniel Raiskin opens with Alfred Schnittke’s Polyphonic Tango, blending Baroque counterpoint with Argentine dance. Returning to the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra after a full ten years, world-renowned cellist Mario Brunello will perform Weinberg’s Cello Concerto, which draws from Jewish klezmer music.
Musicians will like to play it, and critics will delight in blasting it, Shostakovich said after finishing his shortest symphony, the Ninth. Often referred to as Shostakovich’s Classical Symphony by critics, it represents an ironic Mozartean departure within his stylistically varied body of work.
